Then write.
“Writing” is a lot of things depending on the intent of the reference. However, as a verb and a lifestyle, it is a discipline. It must be practiced with intention. It must be managed and engaged. You cannot say “I write.” or “I am a writer.” and not write. You must pick up pen and paper or get your fingers on the keyboard and transmit your thoughts.
For me, all art is synthesis. therefore, when I write I am synthesizing my thoughts and ideas into some form of language or communication. Sometimes, I am certain that I am the only one who knows what I have written or what it means. Doesn’t matter. I am writing. Sometimes it is practice. Sometimes it is worth sharing. It is never a waste of time. I am a writer and I write.
What about you? Are you set up to succeed? Are you set up to write? Are you investing in your discipline?
It doesn’t matter who you or writing for. It doesn’t matter if you will be published. If your goal is to write, set time aside or have to tools ready to capture the moment. I am personally covered in notebooks and journals. They are everywhere in my office, car, bag or anywhere I go. Pens galore. Fun pens. Pens and paper are tools but for me they are also kinetic, mindful methods of writing. Computer? Yes. Laptop? Yes. Tablet? Yes. Tools I keep at hand for the life I lead as a writer – someone who writes.
Give yourself permission. Keep it fun. Have the tools at hand. Then…write!
