Developing Style

When I was a young poet, I wrote following the disciplines for traditional poetry. I used specific rhyme, meter, rhythm as dictated by the study of classical writing. I was challenged by a teacher in university to depart from classical iambic pentameter or sonnet ABAB CDCD etc. and dabble in free verse. Eventually, i developed my own balance between “wordplay” and style. I learned to use form and i learned to break form when it suited. The freedom motif fit my character and eventually i began to break into challenges of form and content. My early work in “The Question is Tolstoy’s Beard” was all about challenging the question “what is poetry?”

Much of what i did and do as an artist is about freedom. Freedom of expression, freedom of speech, freedom to think and feel as an individual – these are all virtues within my work as an artist. I am free to develop my artistic expression any way i desire.

However, every action had a consequence. If i choose to go rogue, i have to own it. I can’t justify being pissy if people don’t like it or appreciate it or want to experience it. That is their freedom.

Therefore, if you are a younger artist looking to develop style and content in order to express yourself and your ideas, it is worth considering who and for what you are writing, painting, dancing or otherwise appealing to or for in your expression.

Find the balance between expression and audience. Develop your style with these things in mind. If you don’t care, don’t. If you want to engage an audience, consider the options that make the most or your opportunity.

Ichi go – ichi e

One time one opportunity. Developing a style is an important part of integrating freely who you are and yet maintaining an audience.

When it comes to your art, know your “why” and follow with the appropriate “how”. 1% of artists are still at their craft after age 40. Be the 1%.
