Loogaroo –

A Though for Halloween

You might hear Loogaroo, Rougaroo, Loup garou – Loogaroo is a Caribbean witch-vampire who sheds her skin at night and is a blue glow flying through the sky like a ball of blue fire to suck the blood of her victims.

Loogaroo or Rougaroo is a New Orleans legend, the Cajun werewolf big foot that prowls the swamps at night. Roogaroo (another variation in spelling) is especially vicious to misbehaving children and Catholics who violate lent.

Loup-garou is an Frech term for werewolf or literally “wolf man”. New Orleans with its rich tradition of cultural diversity – French colony, Spanish colony, indigenous peoples such as Chitimacha, Coushatta and others, African and Caribbean people groups – seems to have blended the various traditions of the boogieman into their own Loogaroo/ Rougaroo.

Language, thoughts and ideas are mobile and not fixed. It is only in the moment that we delude ourselves to believe the way it is now is the way it is. Loogaroo done got in yo’ brain an’ is fibbin’ at ya’. Nothing in this world is permanent, fixed or real.

So…enjoy the day! Celebrate the life you have. Fill it with love and goodness. Jesus said the way to know his disciples is by their love of one another (John 13:35). Oops! You betta’ jump back Jack – Loopgaroo is watchin’.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!
